- FEDERAL HOUSING ADMINISTRATION (FHA)
A federal agency established in 1934 under the National Housing Act to encourage improvement in housing standards and conditions, to provide an adequate home-financing system through the insurance of housing mortgages and credit and to exert a stabilizing influence on the mortgage market. FHA was the government's response to a lack of quality housing, excessive foreclosures and a building industry that collapsed during the depression.Back
