The US Department of Labor was created by federal law in 1913 to "foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners of the United States, to improve their working conditions, and to advance their opportunities for profitable employment." The DOL is responsible for the administration and enforcement of over 180 federal statutes concerning the protection of workers' rights, wages and health and safety.Back
