• FED WIRE
  
  An informal name for the Federal Reserve Communications System. This is the electronic communication network interconnecting Federal Reserve offices, the Federal Reserve Board, member banks, the U.S. Treasury, and other government agencies. The Fed wire is used for transferring member bank reserve account balances and government securities, as well as for transmitting information from the Federal Reserve System. See CHIPS and SWIFT.
