  A unit of measuring ownership in a company (i.e., if a firm has 1,000 shares outstanding and if you own 100 of them, then you have a 10% claim on the firm's net income (NI) and assets). These two terms are used interchangeably. Certificates representing ownership in a corporation and the appropriate claim on the corporation's earnings and assets.
